Finding
Contractors with Angie's List
By Editor, February 8, 2012
Few people, in modern times, have the skills
required to do all of the work that is necessary
to maintain or remodel a home. To get this work
done, then, most families must hire skilled
contractors who can come in and do the job. The
difficult part is identifying someone who can be
trusted to do the job and do it well. The
stress, expense, and inconvenience of having the
wrong person tear out a kitchen for a remodel
and then decide not to finish the job can be
immense. The
Angie's List website helps by allowing its
users to share information on their experiences
with contractors, so that they can more easily
find the good ones.
The
basic premise of Angie's List is that it allows
its members to rate and review contractors. The
ratings are even broken down by grades to make
it easy to get a general idea of the average
level of satisfaction that customers got with a
particular contractor. This makes it easy to
find contractors who have consistently been
rated highly and distinguish them from those
with a history of major problems and perhaps
even cheating people. This is a huge help for
the members, because the average person doesn't
have the knowledge about home repair work to
reliably distinguish a skilled salesperson from
a skilled craftsman.
Though similar information can be gotten from
free sites, Angie's List distinguishes itself by
striving to ensure that its information is of
high quality. It does not accept reviews from
anonymous sources and it does not allow
contractors to pay for listings or for improved
ratings. The company also offers the option of
calling their customer service line and having
someone offer guidance through the process of
finding an appropriate contractor.
The high price of hiring the wrong contractor
makes using Angie's List an excellent option for
many home owners. If you don't already know
someone that you can trust to do work around
your home, it's worth the time and effort to do
research and make sure that you're not hiring
someone who is going to take your money and walk
away without doing the job right.
